FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS - ELLIPSIS MATH PROGRAMS
Why should my child take any enrichment class?
There are two staggering facts:
- One in five U.S. college freshmen now need a remedial math course, according to the National Science Board.
- Students in the U.S. are consistently outperformed by other countries (ranking 28th out of 34 developed countries in mathematics on the last International Student Assessments). We don't want to stay this way. As we all know, children are our future. We are obligated to invest in our children.
Here is the latest report and global ranking from bbc.com: http://www.bbc.com/news/business-32608772.
When children have a strong foundation in their elementary and middle school years, they will thrive in their journey of learning to a higher level of thinking regardless if the subject is math. But in mathematics specifically, it's important that we encourage them early in the young age and let them understand that they are capable and they can succeed in whatever majors or studies they would choose for their future.
Who should attend Ellipsis Academy?
Students in elementary or middle school grades who would like to take their math skills to the next level are great candidates for Ellipsis Academy. Math classes are great for those who are usually curious in math, logic, and problem solving, and they are willing to do extra works. They also like the social aspect of belonging in a group with similar interest.
Why not offer one-on-one enrichment like other math learning center?
We believe that students learn best when surrounded by peers of a similar interest and level. We also limit our class sizes; the average class size is 12. We normally take up to 14 students only for each class. With the small classroom setting, we intend to provide a friendly and supportive learning environment while at the same time create an atmosphere that motivates students. We also offer FlexMath sessions which may be more suitable for tutoring or when students need to catch up, or when student needs to move at different pace.
How would this program advance my child?
Based on a placement test, we will place your child in the right class therefore they will be challenged appropriately. The class will have students with similar mathematics ability. Our curriculum builds fluency as well as promotes critical thinking and problem solving skills. We constantly involve students in group interaction through sharing ideas, discussing problem solving strategies, and math activities or games. We build mastery and in-depth knowledge through these in-class learning and practices, activities, as well as at-home practices. Because the similar level of ability, the group will move pretty fast in topics. Students will have the opportunity to go in-depth in each topic for a pretty short amount of time.
Is your curriculum the same as our child's regular school curriculum?
We have developed a unique mathematic curriculum that is designed to work on top the math curriculum used by Lake Washington School District. We do not to repeat what they have learned in school but instead review and build on what they have learned. Please see our curriculum description on our home page.
Is It possible to join a class in the middle of the session?
While our programs are most beneficial when started early, our leveled classes allow children to join at any time. We use placement tests for entering students to identify the appropriate level. If necessary, we provide additional math tutoring for students entering mid-year to catch up any missed topics. However, please also be aware that we limit our class to a maximum of 14 students. Some class may be full.
Do you have lower/higher grade levels available?
Not currently. We are offering programs from advanced second graders through ninth graders. Please e-mail us if you would like to be informed when other classes are available in the future.
What is the registration process?
All students have to be tested first. Placement test is required for all of our math programs. Enrollment is based on placement test. When you receive the test result for your student qualification, you should register at your earliest convenience. Our general placement test is scheduled in early September and end of January/early February.
Would there be assignments?
Yes, our programs ask students to continue to challenge themselves at home. Our weekly assignment is mandatory. Normally our assignment requires about 1 hour to 1.5 hours per week to complete.
