Founder's profile
(Elly sarwono)
Helping young minds grow has always been Elly's passion. Ever since she left her executive job years ago, she has been involved in numerous efforts in education. Elly's focus has always been in both helping those who would like to advance and also those who needed to strengthen their math skills.
Along the way, she found out that she enjoys working with kids very much, especially in math. Since then, she focused her volunteer work in Math both helping those who would like to advance and those who needed to strengthen their math skills. This led to the birth of Math in Action in 2006. Math in Action (www.mathinaction.org) started from a simple after-school math class grew to become a collection of math enrichment programs serving a number of elementary schools in Redmond, Washington. The website is still active and providing mathematic problem solving for more than 40 schools.
At Norman Rockwell specifically, every year she and other volunteer coaches gather groups of fourth, fifth, and sixth graders to challenge themselves and attend numerous math competitions. It was a pure exhilaration for her and her team to see how students amazed themselves every time they attended math events.
She does not have any more children attending Rockwell. Her oldest daughter is studying Architecture @ Cal Poly and her younger daughter is attending Redmond High, but she still enjoys coaching math teams to elementary students.
With the start of Ellipsis Academy, her drive to keep teaching math and helping our young minds grow is fulfilled. She wants to have the classes she offered at Rockwell to be available to other students at other schools. Her hope is to have Ellipsis Academy serves to a lot more students, not just in Redmond or in the Lake Washington School District, but to other districts too.
Elly is now still active as a volunteer. She has been writing and editing for the Math Challenge program at Math in Action, and a local chapter for Math Kangaroo competition and Noetic Learning Math contests.
